Gyrotonic® Expansion System. The Gyrotonic Expansion System® is an exercise modality that guides you to simultaneously stretch and strengthen your muscles and tendons while also articulating and mobilizing your joints. Corresponding breathing patterns are engaged during the performance of the exercises, thereby increasing your coordination, endurance and aerobic activity. Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® (the non-equipment portion of this system) were both pioneered and developed by Juliu Horvath.

Gyrotonic® combines core strengthening with flowing, circular movement and breath to stimulate the body's energetic centers and internal organs while mobilizing and conditioning all the muscles and joints of the body. "You can easily become inspired to study Gyrotonic long term" comments Chris, "there are so many layers of discovery both within yourself and within the method". "At first you just enjoy the healthy feeling that comes with doing the exercises, like yawning and stretching every part of yourself. Later, when you develop a more intimate rapport with your own breath and movement, you advance into a more vigorous, cardiovascular work-out.

The Gyrotonic® methodology allows you to stretch and strengthen muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of your body. These exercises are synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, thus enhancing aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promoting neuro-muscular rejuvenation.

The Gyrotonic Apparatus. Gyrotonic® is practiced on an apparatus known as the Combination Pulley/Tower Unit. Using the apparatus, you perform movements likened to swimming, ballet, and martial arts, while the equipment provides resistance and/or support. Its design promotes freedom of motion, allowing you to transcend the limits of weight bearing positions with no impact on the joints, much like exercising in water. At the same time, you will be developing the internal strength necessary for creating a healthy, toned, injury-free body.
Unlike a workout on traditional exercise equipment Gyrotonic® exercises offer complete freedom of movement. Performed on the Combination Pulley Tower unit, the system is fully adjustable and can meet the needs of people with varying body types and levels of strength. The even and constant resistance in the handle unit and pulley tower, (through the triple reduction in the pulleys), completely eliminates the jarring that takes place at the beginning and end of exercises performed on conventional exercise equipment, when many injuries occur. The circular, spiraling and undulating movements that characterize the Gyrotonic Expansion System® help to increase the functional capacity of the spine, contributing to a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in increased equilibrium.

Gyrokinesis. Gyrokinesis is the non-equipment component of the Gyrotonic® Expansion System. Using a simple stool and a mat, you follow a rhythmic sequence of exercises designed to facilitate a complete unfolding of your entire body. The class has three distinctive parts, explains Chris, "We begin with 'Awakening the Body for Movement' a series of techniques you do for yourself to tonify vital pressure points and stimulate the nervous system from the outside in. Next you begin moving through a sequence of movements to exercise your spine in every direction possible, creating warmth and flexibility from the inside out. Finally, when your body is warm, the class works on more challenging exercises to cultivate strength in the core and upper body while developing suppleness in the muscles and joints of the legs.
Gyrokinesis® exercises allow you to work on your entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular, as well as all the myriad joint articulations. This approach systematically and gently works your joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements. These movements stimulate your body's internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements.

Fluidity is the key. Postures are not held for long periods of time. Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises appear and feel more like a dance and swimming than like traditional yoga.
